Introduction
There are four most important environmental factors and these are:
a. Temperature b. Relative Humidity
c. Illumination Level and d. Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation Level
It was found that there occurred damages to the food stuffs, artifacts and art objects due to uncontrolled temperature, humidity and light. There are many examples where dryness (due to variation in temperature and humidity) has caused wood or ivory to crack and excessive bright light has taken away dyes or watercolors from art objects. It is very important that the temperature and humidity levels of the storage houses like cold storage, medicine storage and food storage be properly maintained for well preservation of the stuffs.
Usually, a humidity of range 60% - 65% and a temperature of range 300C – 320C are suitable for the preservation of art and wood objects. Therefore, it is needed that we design appropriate instruments to monitor and measure these environmental parameters and regulate them as necessary.
In this project, we have designed and developed an 89S52 microcontroller based ‘Temperature and Humidity Meter (THM Meter)’, which will monitor, measure and display the temperature and humidity of a particular confined environment. Exhaust fan and Air Conditioner could be installed to regulate the temperature and the humidity levels when the set points are exceeded (Fig-7.3). For a small environment like the living room, a cost effective solution (Fig-1) is the installation of an exhaust fan to pump out moisture-air.
