INTRODUCTION
Endoscopy is taken from latin word where
“endo” means within & “scope” means instrument for inspecting.
It means to examination and inspection of the interior of body organs, joints, or cavities through an endoscope, a flexible tube using fiber optics and powerful lens systems to provide lighting and visualization to those internal parts being explored.
ORIGIN
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the first version of the esophageal device (PillCam™ ESO, manufactured by Given Imaging, Israel and marketed by InScope, a division of Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a Johnson & Johnson company, Cincinnati) on November 29, 2004.
PROCEDURE
The capsule is very smooth, enabling it to slip down the throat with just a sip of water. After the capsule is swallowed, it moves through the digestive track naturally with the aid of the peristaltic activity of the intestinal muscles.
DISADVANTAGES
1.Camera pill is not long enough to make it to the large intestine.
2. Have to wear a bulky belt all day.
3. Small risk -- less than 1 percent -- of the capsule getting stuck, which requires either surgery or an endoscopy procedure.
CONCLUSION
It will be fascinating to observe how endoscopy continues to evolve when it seems now that nothing could be more helpful than a camera inside a tiny pill. What will they think of next?
