INTRODUCTION:
It’s simply not business as usual in many industries today. All the industries are facing unprecedented challenges in the national and international markets, due to disappearance of the boundaries. In such an environment companies should be flexible, lean, active, agile and dedicated to deliver maximum quality and customer service only those companies will be able to survive in the emerging competitive environment.
REENGINEERING DEFINED:
Hammer and J. Champy have defined Reengineering as “the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of business process to achieve dramatic improvement in critical contemporary measures or performances such as cost, quality, service and speed” (Hammers).
REENGINEERING CONCEPTS:
Reengineering has delivered extraordinary benefits, to those who have adhered to its four fundamentals (Dhavan):
It’s process centric
It’s redesigned ruled
It’s radical
It’s dramatic
CHARACTERISTICS OF REENGINEERING:
Several jobs are combined into one.
Workers make decisions.
The steps in the process are performed in a natural order,
Processes have multiple versions.
Checks and controls are reduced etc
DAVENPORT MODEL:
This model given by T.H. Davenport is a highly technocratic approach. It comprises of the following 5 steps:
Identifying the process innovation.
Identifying the change levers.
Developing a process vision
Understanding the existing process and
Designing and photocopying the new process.
COMPARISION OF METHODOLOGIES:
The following points are used as basis for comparison of each methodology:
Break through as opposed to incremental change,
A linkage of corporate (business) and process objectives.
Changes plan to anticipate and neutralize resistance.
An implementation plan to put the “next steps” in concrete focus and
Clear roles and responsibilities for sponsors, reengineering teams
