ABSTRACT
Ultrahigh-definition television (UHDTV) is now
being studied as the most promising candidate for next
generation television beyond HDTV. It consists of extremely
high-resolution imagery and multichannel 3-D sound to give
viewers a stronger sensation of reality. Various aspects
should be taken into account when determining UHDTV . Of
those, it is believed that user visual experience is some of
the most important aspects to be considered. This paper
describes the studies conducted on the relationship between
image format and visual experience of UHDTV.
INTRODUCTION
High-definition television (HDTV) is now entering
into a practical stage in many countries. Research and
development (R&D) on HDTV started in Japan more
than 40 years ago and was aimed at media that met
the social demands of postindustrial societies [1].
This aim is being achieved as HDTV and is now
spreading widely throughout the world. These R&D
efforts have already shifted to the next step of
ultrahigh-definition television (UHDTV), which
Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK, Tokyo, Japan) has
already started to develop as the next-generation
television for HDTV and the ultimate form of 2-D
television. This R&D project was aimed at media that
would allow users to be Babsorbed[ in an
environment created by an audio/visual presentation.
