Gentle Introduction to MUFFLER
A muffler (or silencer or back box in British English) is a device for reducing the amount of
Noise emitted by the exhaust on most vehicles.
The internal combustion engine muffler or silencer was Originally invented by Milton O. Reeves.
Need of Muffler
The basic need of the muffler in the IC engine is to reduce the noise level. Because an Ic engine running with out a muffler creates a huge sound and noise which may be harmful and very dangerous for human body as well as other living thing.
It has been observed that noise level of more than 80 db. Is Injurious for human being. So this project mainly concern with reduction of noise level and also reduction in carbon content which will consequently reduce the air pollution
Principle of modification
It is possible to produce a sound wave that is exactly the opposite of another wave. This is the basis for those noise-canceling headphones.
If two waves are in phase, they add up to a wave with the same frequency but twice the amplitude. This is called constructive interference. But, if they are exactly out of phase, they add up to zero. This is called destructive interference. At the time when the first wave is at its maximum pressure, the second wave is at its minimum. If both of these waves hit your ear drum at the same time, you would not hear anything because the two waves always add up to zero
Existing Design
More carbon content in the exhaust due to lack of the glass wool.
Outer shell becomes hotter.
Due to only one perforated pipe noise is not much reduced.
Outer shell may be melted
Working of Muffler
Located inside the muffler is a set of tubes. These tubes are designed to create Reflected waves that interfere with each other or cancel each other out.
The exhaust gases and the sound waves enter through the center tube. They bounce off the back wall of the muffler and are reflected through a hole into the main body of the muffler
They pass through a set of holes into another chamber, where they turn and go out the last pipe and leave the muffler.
Advantages
Mufflers that reduced backpressure relative to earlier models became increasingly available
The late 20th century, and resulted in increased engine efficiency, performance, power output.
And simultaneously decreased overall wear and tear on the engines' components, as well as noise To levels in compliance with the law.
CONCLUSIONS
1.)The muffler is designed to attenuate both high and low frequency noises.
2.)The material used in the muffler is capable to withstand temperature of higher order.
3.)The outside body shell does not overheated.
4.)Due to the glass wool carbon content is much reduced.
5.)Although the muffler has been designed for stationary engines, it can be used in the automotive exhaust with minor modifications.
