BACKGROUND OF THE SUBJECT
There is a saying – A manager succeeds or fails not so much because of what he does; but because of what he is able to get someone else to do! Managers around the world want employees to dutifully carry out the assigned job responsibilities. Beyond the minimum requirements, they also expect employees to maintain all the informal norms of the organization along with maintaining comraderie in the organization. Without such contributions, organization cannot survive in this age of ever-increasing uncertainties and complexity of businesses.
The success of managers indeed depends significantly on their ability to communicate effectively to all the people i.e. superiors, subordinates, peers including all external and internal stakeholders of the business. This managerial role involves linking up groups of people through some basic organizational communication practices. Societies and organizations are continuously constructed by their members through communication practices. In Weick's term, communication is the core process of organizing (Weick 1979).
The term communication has many and varied meaning. It can be defined as the transfer of information from the sender to receive the information being understood by both the sender and the receiver. As communicators, people use message/s for transmission and reception through symbols which represents what they see, feel or experience. Consistent communication requires competencies and contributions – not merely in words, but through a continuous, interpersonal process and system. A communication process typically involves designing a plan, constructing clear messages, synchronizing those messages across various media channels, steering those involved in the information flow process, engaging, listening and measuring.
