INTRODUCTION
INDUSTRY PROFILE
Despite the global economic slowdown growth in the Indian electronics industry in 2009 was on par with the previous year at 9.9%, although this was down on the double-digit growth achieved in 2006 and 2007. In 2010 output is forecast to grow by 13.6% and in the medium to long-term India will continue to show strong growth driven by a large, fast growing domestic market, significant foreign investment and an improving regulatory environment.
To attract foreign investment the government has adopted China style Special Economic Zones (SEZ) with the aim to provide islands of excellence where the infrastructure is world standard. Fifteen-year tax breaks are given to foreign investors and SEZs are treated as foreign territories for the purpose of trade operations, duties and tariffs.
ELECTRICITY
Electricity is the flow of electrical power or charge. It is a secondary energy source which means that we get it from the conversion of other sources of energy, like coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear power and other natural sources, which are called primary sources. The energy sources we use to make electricity can be renewable or non-renewable, But electricity itself is neither renewable or non-renewable.
Despite its great importance in our daily lives, most of us rarely stop to think what life would be like without electricity. Yet like air and water, we tend to take electricity for granted. Everyday, we use electricity to do many jobs for us -- from lighting and heating/cooling our homes, to powering our televisions and computers. Electricity is a controllable and convenient form of energy used in the applications of heat, light and power.
Electric equipment industry contributes over 2% of GDP which is projected to increase to about 12% in 2015 according to a study by Frost & Sullivan. During the period, consumption of electrical equipment is estimated to increase from over USD 28 billion now to USD 363 billion, growing at a CAGR of about 30%. It is also expected that during 2010-2015, the Indian equipment manufacturing will grow at 5.5 times the growth rate of global electronic equipment production.
