CGH Earth (formerly the Casino Group of hotels) was founded by Mr.Dominic Joseph Kuruvinakunnel on the harbour island of Willington, in Cochin, Kerala. What started out in 1957 as the Casino Restaurant, catering to the dockworkers and commuters of Willington Island, evolved into the familiar Casino Hotel and eventually into The Casino Group of Hotels.
The topic for the study is “A Study on the Effectiveness of Performance Appraisal System at CGH Earth Experience Hotel”. This study is mainly conducted to determine the current performance appraisal system of the company and its effectiveness. A study was carried out among 50 respondents to ascertain the necessary information relating to Performance appraisal. The main tool used to elicit information is questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of 15 questions.
However it was found that majority of the employees are satisfied with current appraisal system of the company. The strength of any organization is its people. If people attended to work properly they can have to be accomplished by the people. Some of them may have capabilities to do certain tasks better than other task. And some of them may not have capabilities to do the tasks assigned to them. In this situation one of the important activities conducted by any organization is performance appraisal. Employee performance is the only way to achieve organizational objectives. So, Performance Appraisal has achieved a greater importance in Human Resource Management.
INTRODUCTION
Formal appraisal of an individual’s performance began in Wei dynasty (AD 221-265) in China, where an imperial appraised the performance of the member of official family. During the First World War, at the instance of Walter Dil Scott, the U.S army adopted “man-to-man” rating system for evaluating military personnel. The objective of the system is primarily for development and to some extent for remedial; it is not simply to control. The data generated through the system could be put to several uses, such as, either to the identification of potentials, as to form the basis of rewards to high performance and remedial actions for low performance. The success of such a system assumes openness within the organization, trust between supervisors and subordinates and above all a certain degree of self-detachment and objectivity at all levels in the evaluation of performance
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Almost every organization in one way or another goes through a periodic ritual, formally or informally, known as performance appraisal. Performance appraisal has been called many things. The formal performance appraisal has been called a tool of management, a control process, an activity and a critical element in human resources allocation. The present study is an important step to find out the practice of Performance appraisal System in CGH Earth Experience Hotel and to study the effectiveness of the system. Employees are the most significant resource of any business, and performance appraisals reflect the organization's commitment in developing this important resource of human capital. Performance appraisals grant upper management an opportunity to reward excellent performance or reprimand unsatisfactory performance.

In the era of cut throat competition and globalization, organizations have realized the importance of strategic HR practices for gaining a competitive edge over the competitors. A well designed performance management system can play a crucial role in streamlining the activities of the employees in an organization for realizing the ultimate corporate mission and vision.

PSYCHOLOGICAL APPRAISALS:
Large organization employee full time industrial psychologist. When psychologist is used for evaluations they assess an individual’s future potential and not past performance. They appraisal normally consist of in-depth interviews, psychologist then writes an evaluation of the employee’s intellectual, emotional, motivational and other work related characteristics. Thus suggests individual potential and may predict future performance.
ASSESSMENT CENTERS:
This method of appraising was first applied in German army in 1930; later business and industrial houses started using the method. It is system where assessment of several individuals is done various experts by using various techniques. These techniques include role playing case studies simulation exercise structure in sight transaction analysis.
HUMAN RESOURCE ACCOUNTING:
HR accounting deals with the cost of contribution of human resource to the organization. cost of employees includes cost of man power planning recruitment selection induction placement training development wages and benefits etc.
