XIME has instituted socially useful and productive activity (SUPA) in order to give every student an opportunity to work with an NGO or government organization in a field relating to social welfare so as to enable him / her to understand its activities and to make a contribution to the organization through the application of modern management concepts. This programme is aimed at orienting the students to become socially responsible and sensitive citizens. SUPA is something special and unique about XIME and shows the orientation and commitment of the institute towards social aspects. SUPA spanned across approx 3 weeks or more precisely 20 days starting from 27th Dec 2010 to 15th Jan 2011.
History & Background
Various forms of microfinance practices have been in existence in Kerala from early days.
When the concept of Self Help Group was introduced in Kerala in the 1980s, it was quick to gather momentum.
In the early nineties a community led poverty identification format was developed as part of the Alappuzha UBSP Programme.
By this time the NABARD promoted SHG, linkage banking programme had established itself as a viable microfinance model.
The Mission Statement
"To eradicate absolute poverty in ten years through concerted community action under the leadership of local governments, by facilitating organization of the poor for combining self-help with demand-led convergence of available services and resources to tackle the multiple dimensions and manifestations of poverty, holistically."
Local economic development
It is the mission of the Kudumbashree programme to strengthen both local governments and the women’s community network to take on the challenges in developing their own unique, sustaining model of local economic development. This model involves community participation through the women's network in micro level planning and development. It also involves convergence of resources and programmes at the level of local government. Some of the initiatives are listed below:
Collective farming
Collective Farming is one of the several initiatives introduced by Kudumbashree to improve the livelihood of the poor families in the Neighbourhood Groups. It not only brings in significant changes in the lives of the poor but also helps to increase agricultural production by bringing fallow and cultivable waste land into agricultural use. The programme is being implemented in all districts with the support of LSGs.
Social development
From reaching out to the poorest of the poor to empowering tribals, from caring for the disabled to open up a new world of opportunity to children from poor families, from enabling women to find their voice, to empowering them to become the social conscience of the community, Kudumbashree’s space in social development has been multifaceted and challenging. While care and compassion is one end of the social framework, claiming and upholding rights form the other end. Some of the initiatives are listed below:
