Social performance of public enterprises
a case study
In India, public enterprises were
established with the aim of
building a heavy industry base
and providing infrastructure facilities
in the country. The importance of
public enterprises is vital in the
national economy in terms of
investment, areas of operation,
persons employed, coverage,
technological capabilities and
strategic significance.
Objective of the study :
The main objective of the study
is to measure the contribution of
Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd.
(CPCL) for social progress in terms
of social benefits provided by the
company. The study also intends to
examine the various social benefits
provided by CPCL to the employees,
community and the general public.
For the purpose of the study recent
five years (1995-96 to 1999-2000)
period is selected and the data required
for the analysis is obtained
from the annual reports of CPCL.
Brief profile of CPCL :
Chennai Petroleum Corporation
Limited ( CPCL) is the new name of
Madras Refinaries Limited (MRL).
The name change of the company
has come into effect from 6-4-2000.
