What is Magnetic Bearing
A bearing that uses magnetic forces to support the rotating shaft and carry a load.
Magnetic bearings support moving machinery without physical contact, for Ex. They can levitate a rotating shaft and permit relative motion without friction and wear.
Common configuration of Active Magnetic Bearing
1.Radial Magnetic Bearing
2.Axial or Thrust Magnetic Bearing
3.Conical Magnetic Bearing
Advantages of Magnetic bearings
No lubrication
Ideal for clean-room operation
Can operate under difficult environmental conditions like heat, cold, steam, vacuum, aggressive chemicals
Low vibration and noise
Electronic unbalance compensation
No mechanical contact
Wide temperature rang capability
It can be operated in vacuum
Applications of Magnetic Bearings
Magnetic bearing advantages include very low and predictable friction, ability to run without lubrication and in vacuum.
Magnetic bearings are increasingly used in industrial machines such as compressors, turbines, pumps, motors and generators.
Magnetic bearings are also used in high precision instruments ex: watt-hour meter hence it can be used to electrical power consumption.
Also used to support maglev trains in order to get low noise and smooth ride by eliminating physical contact surfac
