Levels of Value Addition
Level- 1 : Post Harvest level/ Primary Processing: Proper Cleaning, grading and Packaging particularly of fruits and vegetables
Level-2 : Secondary processing (basic processing, packaging and branding) of post harvest produces particularly of foodgrains (i.e. Atta. Suji, Besan, etc.) & milk produce.
Level- 3 : High- End Processing (Complex processing technologies, equipment finance and global in nature).
Milk Processing in India
India’s dairy industry - Most successful development programmes in the post-Independence period.
several brands have been created by cooperatives like Amul (GCMMF), Sanchi (MP), Vijaya (AP), Verka (Punjab), Saras (Rajasthan). Nandini (Karnataka), Milma (Kerala), Arogya (Tamil Nadu) and Gokul (Kolhapur).
Investment opportunities exist - Manufacturing of value-added milk products like milk powder, packaged milk, butter, ghee, cheese and ready-to-drink milk products.
Thrust may be given to following areas :
Brand image or major player needs to be projected in leading international dairy trade fairs, particularly of those countries to which exports are being targeted.
Likely Role of Agro & Food Processing Sector
Ensure that a fair share of added value goes to the producer thereby Income level of farmers can be improved
Migration from rural areas can be minimised
Post harvest losses can be minimised
Employment opportunities can be enhanced
High quality standards and low processing cost is ensured
Another step may be to encourage technical collaboration and marketing tie-ups with leading international dairy companies
