INTRODUCTION
An anti-lock braking system, or ABS is a safety system which prevents the wheels on a motor vehicle from locking up (or ceasing to rotate) while braking.
ABS means a portion of service brake
System that automatically controls the
Degree of rotational wheel slip during
Braking.
FEATURES OF ANTI LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM
It must stop vehicle within a smallest distance.
It must act instantaneously in case of emergency braking.
Its retardation must be uniform.
Its pedal effort must be with continent capacity of the driver.
It must have long life.
Vibration should be minimum.
It must have min weight.
It must not effected by heat, water & dust.
ECU IN ABS
Sensing the Rate of Angular Rotation of the Wheels
2) Transmitting Signals Regarding the Rate of Wheel Angular Rotation to One or More Controlling Devices which Interpret those Signals and Generate Responsive Controlling Output Signals and
3) Transmitting those Controlling Signals to One or More Modulator Devices Which Adjust Brake Actuating Forces in Response to those Signals
TRACTION CONTROL
The ABS equipment may also be used to implement traction control system on acceleration of the vehicle. If, when accelerating, the tire loses traction, the ABS controller can detect the situation and take suitable action so that traction is regained. Manufacturers often offer this as a separately priced option even though the infrastructure is largely shared with ABS. More sophisticated versions of this can also control throttle levels and brakes simultaneously.
ADVANTAGES OF ABS
Stopping on ice.As mentioned above, an ABS prevents lock-ups and skidding, even in slippery conditions. Anti-lock brakes have been proven to save lives in some situations by helping drivers keep control of a vehicle.
Higher resale value. As a feature on a car or truck, an ABS raises the market value of the vehicle. Nowadays, where ABS technology has become standard on many vehicles, not having it could result in a lower price for resale
Traction control. An ABS shares some of the infrastructure of a traction control system, where new technology helps ensure that each wheel has traction on the road. That makes it easy for manufacturers to install both of these features at the factory
