ARM Processer
o Today we are in midst of
a digital revolution.
Portable applications are continually growing in sophistication.
Burden on embedded microprocessor.
ARM RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) technology addresses today's
design Challenges
In 1980 BBC went looking for a computer to fit a series of programmes they wanted to produce.
Acron revamped the Atom which used 6502 processor.
The Micro Program was born in 1982 with BBC microcomputer.
The most successful version of BBC micro-The Master-finished in May 1993.
EVOLUTION OF ARM:-
Acron made their own processor.
Acron wrote a BASIC program that emulated the ARM1 instruction set.
The designers were new to the processor design.
Acron made a entire computer from the ground up.
Archimedes was released.
THUMB:-
Compressed instruction set that uses 16-bit instruction encoding
In Thumb the smaller op codes have less funcionality.
JazzelleDBX (Direct Byte code eXecutions) allows Thumb instruction to execute Java Byte codes.
Thumb removes the trade off between performance and cost of code density.
It has the ability to switch back to full ARM code.
Applications:-
Used in gaming consoles by Sony (Play station) and Nintendo (Micro).
Used in Mobile Phones, PDAs, MP3 Decoders.
High Speed Data Acquisition System.
Used in Digital Still Cameras, Digital TVs, Digital Set-Top Box.
