INTRODUCTION
As we all know, Wheelchairs are the basic need of disabled persons. Thus automizing it ,would be a great help to them.
Automatic wheelchair is a wheelchair that is propelled by means of a motor ,controlled by microcontroller rather than manual power.
Automatic wheelchairs are useful for those unable to propel a manual wheelchair or who may need to use a wheelchair for distances or over terrain which would be fatiguing in a manual wheelchair.
LITERATURE REVIEW BY LING TSOU
The ultimate goal of his project was to design motorized wheelchair unit with an attachable device that translates a manual wheelchair into a powered one.
The attachment device should be portable and powerful enough to propel a person sitting on a standard manual wheelchair.
The project includes the design of control mechanism using joystick control to provide an easier way of operating the wheelchair.
OBJECTIVE OF OUR PROJECT
Our project includes the design of an alternative control mechanism using joystick control alongwith the additional features to enhance the operation of wheelchair:
Sensor to detect obstacle and accordingly operates the wheelchair
Keypad attatched to it to control home appliances
The primary focus is affordability.
The end solution of the project is to provide an inexpensive motorized wheelchair with maximum possible features .
BLOCK DIAGRAM
The connection between the joystick and the controller was interrupted by inserting an embedded microcontroller in between.
There are also multiple sensors added and interfaced to the embedded microcontroller.
The user chooses the direction and speed with the joystick, the joystick sends the information to the embedded microcontroller and the microcontroller checks it's surrounding with the help of the sensors and then corrects and alternates the joystick signals if necessary based on the control system algorithm before sending it to the motor controller.
So if the user selects a direction and speed but there is an obstacle in the way the microcontroller will change the initial direction and speed so the wheelchair can avoid possible collisions.
CONCLUSION
It offer a means of displacement for patients with problems in their lower limbs.
Some patients that cannot manipulate the wheelchair with their arms due to a lack of force or psychomotor problems in the superior members, request electric wheelchairs, frequently manipulated with joysticks
Its safety features reduce no of wheelchair accidents and related injuries .
It reduces the effort of care giving staff in health care system . It having many advantages like Obstacle detection , Simple to install and easy to maintain, Highly reliable, cost effective and compact in size, Low power consumption.
