Teeth are anchored in the jaw by their roots, which fit into sockets of the spongy bone.
In a growing child, the roots of the deciduous teeth are gradually absorbed into the bone.
When a baby tooth “falls out,” it is really just the loose crown, dislodged by an incoming permanent tooth, that emerges from the gum line
Deciduous teeth / baby teeth or milk teeth
Deciduous teeth / baby teeth or milk teeth begin to erupt by the child is 6 months old & all 20 teeth erupt within next 2 yrs.
Milk teeth start falling out when a child is about six years old.
Deciduous teeth are gradually replaced by 28 permanent teeth till the age of 12 yr.
After 18 yr. of age 4 more molars erupt which are known as wisdom teeth.
Parts of Tooth
The sensitive nerves and blood vessels at the center of each tooth are protected by several layers of tissueThe Enamel: The outermost layer & the hardest substance in the body. The Dentin: Bone like layer under the enamel & surrounding the pulp from crown to rootThe Cementum: Cementum is hard tissue which covers the root & to which periodontal ligaments are attached. This tissue holds the tooth in place.
What is dental Caries?
Tooth decay affects approximately 90 percent of all children by the time they are 14 years old.
When bacteria present in the mouth are exposed to sugars commonly found in foods, the bacteria produce harmful acids that attack tooth enamel.
Left unchecked, the acid eats holes in the enamel and forms cavities of tooth decay. Most tooth decay forms in the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of the molars, called pits and fissures.
To avoid dental caries
Don’t allow to settle the carbohydrate on the surface of teeth
Brushing at night before going to bed
Rinsing your mouth after every meal
To use tooth paste with fluorides
To prevent cavities, dentists apply fluoride (a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel) to teeth.
Gum disease / Periodontal disease
Gum disease occurs when bacteria attack periodontal ligaments. This creates space between teeth & gum tissue
This space between the tooth and gum, called a periodontal pocket, traps even more bacteria.
Malocclusions[/b
Teeth that are crowded, crooked, or out of alignment—make it more difficult to clean teeth, which can lead to other oral health problems such as tooth decay and gum disease
Many of these disorders start to appear between the ages of 6 and 12, when permanent teeth begin to erupt.
Generally, malocclusions result when the jaw is too small to hold all of the teeth. Malocclusions are often genetic, tending to run in families.
Habits like thumb sucking & tongue thrusting may lead to poorly aligned teeth.
Malocclusions are treated by dentists specially trained to correct them, called orthodontists.
[b]Treatment of Malocclusion
Muscular exercises for the correction of certain mal-relationships
To use metallic appliances or 'braces.' In addition to other benefits, parents can give their children the advantage of a pleasing facial appearance.
