Adaptive Structures
ABSTRACT
Adaptive structures focus on application of materials and structural forms to components and vehicles that can sense and
respond to changes in their environments, missions, and health, ultimately providing greater performance, utility, and
robustness to the systems they support. Although relatively young, the adaptive structures field is being addressed actively in
universities, government, and industry. One of today’s most ambitious adaptive structures endeavors-DARPA’s Morphing
Air-craft Structures (MAS) program - is entering its second phase after down-selecting two competing teams. Lockheed
Martin leads one team, advancing a folding-wing concept multimission aircraft. A radio-controlled demonstrator of this
concept is to fly under Phase II.
