An Energy-Aware Adaptive Clustering Protocol for Sensor Networks
ABSTRACT
The proposed protocol is the nodes with the maximum amount of residual energies being selected as the cluster-heads. This paper defines a new eligibility criterion for the selection of cluster-heads and introduces data-acknowledgements, broadcast updates and cluster-head reselection to make the protocol robust against node and channel failures.
The simulation results and the associated improve the system lifetime by 2 to 3 times as compared to the LEACH. Moreover, the author has considered only one level of clustering. The protocol design can be modified to allow multiple levels of clustering arranged in a hierarchy of cluster-heads, where the lowest level cluster-heads form the next-level clusters among them and come under a superior cluster- head, and so on. This may lead to better performance in case of extremely large networks.
