Attenuation

Attenuation is the reduction in amplitude and intensity of a signal.
The attenuation of an optical fiber measures the amount of light lost between input and output.
Receivers require some minimum power level, to accurately detect the transmitted signal.
Absorption
Intrinsic Absorption:- If an incoming photon has its energy (Ep=hf) is equal to the energy gap (ΔE) of the material, this photon will be absorbed by the material.
Minimizing Intrinsic Absorption
Suitable choice of both core and cladding compositions.
Change the light frequency.
Minimizing Macro Bending Losses
Different fiber optic cables have different specifications on how much the cable can bend without affecting the stated performance or loss.
