What is Authentication?
Definition: Authentication can be defined as determining the identity to the required level of assurance.
It’s a process of verifying the identity of what it claims to be.
How Can it be Done?
Using Passwords
Using Encrypted Passwords
Using Tokens(Something you have)
Using Biometrics
What is Biometrics?
It is the technique of identifying the humans based on physical or behavioral traits.
How does it work?
It works on the basis of unique human characteristics like fingerprint, face, iris, voice etc
A database is created which contains the sample of user’s biometric characteristics.
But the physical characteristics of human may change. Thus while registration process multiple samples of the user area taken, they are combined and an average is stored.
Exact match not required, only an approximation is taken into account.
Configurable Parameters
Any biometric authentication system uses
two parameters :
I)FAR(False Accept Ration) : Measurement of
the chance that user who should be rejected is
actually accepted by the system as ‘good enough’.
FAR= No. of False acceptances/No. of identification attempts.
II) FRR(False Reject Ration):Measurement of the chance that user who should be accepted is actually rejected by the system as ‘not good enough’.
FRR= No. of False rejections/No. of identification attempts.
