INTRODUCTION
For every incoming college student, choosing the best course can be a difficult decision while choosing a major and thinking about the future career is yet another difficult task to reflect on.
A major is a field in which a student chooses to specialize during its postgraduate study. The choice determines the academic discipline, environmental influences and the interest in the field of the student.
There are some students who arrive on campus and know exactly what course or major to pursue and already having an idea what their future careers will be but most of the students do not know which major will get them there. In fact, due to the large number of courses available to students, most of them find themselves switching majors during college.
IBS Hyderabad is one of the few institutions in the country that offers a degree in management studies. The importance of choosing a specialization in Management as well as any courses available is a vital and crucial part for every student as it will be the building blocks of success in the future. Students have to be more knowledgeable about the path they will be taking for this decision will help them to be prepared for their career path.
As seen so far, we have seen that there are three kinds of scenarios. First being wherein the students know what specialization to pursue from the very beginning. Secondly there would be students who subsequently decide what the right path is for them within the time span of the first year and then there are the laggards who take a last minute decisions.
SAMPLE DESIGN
A survey of approximately 100 individuals will provide database for this study. The sample will be selected on a random basis. The respondents will be selected from various business schools of the batch 2013. The respondents will be adults above the age of 19.
APPROACH TO ANALYSIS
We will use regression, correlation, ANOVA and software like SAS and SPSS. We will construct a two-tier analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model which will be represented in a questionnaire sent to 100 management students to survey their opinions. The relative weight of each factor in the model will be calculated. Analysis of variance and t test will be applied to test for any significant differences in opinion among the students.
