A social Enterprise, established in 2008 to encourage’ Green products’ promote’ Green Livelihood’ for rural artisans
Established with an aim to create a long term, sustainable & non-migratory livelihood for rural & tribunal artisans in the bamboo sector
It provides learning opportunities on various aspects of project management.
What is the business of this company?

To create a long-term , sustainable and non-migratory livelihood for the rural and urban artisans in the bamboo sector
It deals in bamboo products- House, Furniture ,bags baskets gift items carvings, etc.& other lifestyle products
BHI promotes viable financial, social & environmental solutions to the rural poor without people migrating
How was the business organised?
The couple wanted to buy ecofriendly furniture for home and zeroed on bamboo furniture but were not satisfied with what was available in market & browsed internet for bamboo furniture outlets in India
Learnt that bamboo furniture is imported- China, Indonesia
After rigorous research, found that bamboo products are made in north- eastern states & more than half of population livelihood depends on bamboo
This triggered them to look into dynamics of bamboo & after research, came to know about bamboo artisans of Katlamara, a village situated in Tripura & went to analyze artisans skill
Having observed the wide range of bamboo products & their usage, the couple decided to establish a business in bamboo sector
Prior to starting, studied domain area for 6months & its marketability
Through research they found that bamboo can save our planet in 10 ways
Also identified legalities & regulations in bamboo sector – Forest Act 1927
Defining the project scope
BHI main objective is to connect the tribal artisans with the mainstream market & concentrates on using locally available bamboo in order to develop contemporary lifestyle products that suit the market tastes & demand( They also need to focus on money, raw material & information to have a better supply chain)

Availability of bamboo in selected places, BHI is finding difficulty in connecting the artisans
Two Varities of bamboo that BHI works with- Albeverii & Balcoa- are in Tripura, Nagaland & Mizoram while other variety of bamboo named Stricke available in AP
Language was barrier & artisans were apprehensive about business
Lack of mobile network connections & unavailability of telephone booths, which causes hindrance in work flow like sending design by post
Lack of market linkages
People are unaware of bamboo products and brands
No standard pricing
Procurement of raw material, production, logistics, limited finances, lack of strong brand image, lack of proper distribution channels etc.
