Informative Binarization
Binary image is an image produced from a gray level image making its pixels have only two different values. As different pixel values are mapped to only two different values, most of the information is lost in a binary image. The quality of a binary image is again dependent on the quality of the input gray or color image. If the input image is low intensity image, the resulted binary image is blurred and blacky. If the input image is over bright, the resulted binary image is all white washed. In general, most edge information of an image is lost in binarization process and the resulted binary image gets blurred. Edges carry most of the information in an image. We are interested to keep most of the edge information in a binary image so that a binary image looks more natural and meaningful. Let's see the following two binary images of figure-1 shown in figure-2 and figure-3.
