Abstracts: Gearboxes are a key component of many industrial power transmission systems. Industrial gearboxes are highly engineered machines. Many components in gear box have tight tolerances and optimized gear geometry, which are required for transferring working loads as smoothly and efficiently as possible. The successful operation and long life of a gearbox is directly related to proper maintenance. A gearbox has failed when it can no longer do the job efficiently for which it was designed. Failure of gearbox could be due to the failure of any of its components namely gears, shafts, bearings and the casing. Or other failures could be leakage of oil (or lubricant) through oil seals, overheating, vibration and acoustics. These failures are being inspected by methods like visual walk around, measure temperature, measure oil pressure, measure sound and vibration etc. The analysis of failure of gearbox could increase the gearbox efficiency and also reduce the cost and time. Thus the various causes for the failure in gearbox are studied. The various methods for inspecting this failures are carried out. And the best remedies for the failures are being suggested.
