WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and a content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system. WordPress is used by over 16.7% of Alexa Internet's "top 1 million" websites and as of August 2011 manages 22% of all new websites.[5] WordPress is currently the most popular blogging system in use on the Internet.[6][7]
WordPress is certainly one of the most feature rich and user-friendly publishing platforms available today. At the same time, webmasters love it because of the openness, extensibility and wide open source community. WordPress is today used in serious projects and on large commercial websites besides the millions of hard-working bloggers sharing their valuable knowledge. This trend has created a massive market for professional, high quality premium themes. Recently we have also seen a market emerge for high quality WordPress plugins as nearly any kind.
WordPress originally gained a position in the market by being an open source and entirely free platform. I believe the premium offerings around it today is going to make it even stronger. Some of the top web developers have picked WordPress as an income stream and deliver some of the best WordPress plugins for a remarkably small fee. Further they often back them up with proper support for their customers. In some cases, free plugin developers offer support, but typically it depends on how busy they are.
We all know how time-consuming or expensive it is to implement the perfect website or blog. It is therefore a key priority, and worth investing in to make sure the tools we use is always up to date and most importantly well supported.
