INTRODUCTION
Data preparation is the activity that ensures the accuracy of the data and there conversion from raw form to reduced and classified forms that are appropriate for analysis.
It includes:
editing
coding
data entry
EDITING
it is the primary step in analysis.
detects errors and omissions, corrects them and certifies that
maximum quality standards are achieved.
accurate.
consistent with the intent of the question in survey.
uniformly entered and complete.
arranged to simplify coding and tabulation.
Field Editing
it is done soon after the data is gathered.
abbreviations and symbols are used during personal
interviews and it is difficult to complete what was abbreviated.
in such case, guessing or self-interviewing should not be done.
Central Editing
for small study, the use of single editor produces maximum
consistency. For large studies, editing should be allocated to
each editor.
this approach will not identify inconsistencies between
answers.
the problem is handled by identifying questions in different
sections.
Coding closed questions
it includes scaled items for which answers can be anticipated.
closed questions are preferred for their efficiency and
specificity.
easier to code, record and analyze.
questionnaire is precoded during the design stage, with this
codes for variable categories are accessible directly from the
questionnaire.
Digital
telephone key-pad evaluates customer services and links to
telephone lines.
using this the invited participants answers by pressing the
appropriate number.
computer captures the data by decoding the tone’s electrical
signal and storing the numeric or alphabetic answers in data
file.
