INTRODUCTION
The earth whose ground surface is at the higher elevation is commonly called the backfill, and the wall is said to retain this backfill
The basic function of this wall is to provide lateral support for a mass of the earth r other material that is at higher elevation behind d wall than d earth r other material in front of wall
Hence they may broadly termed as Retaining Wall
Some retaining walls may support vertical loads in addition to lateral loads from the retained materials
BASIC DEFINITION OF RETANING WALL:
Retaining walls are structure used to retain soil, rock or other materials in a vertical condition.
Hence they provide a lateral support to vertical slopes of soil that would otherwise collapse into a more natural shape.
A retaining wall is a structure designed and constructed to resist the lateral pressure of soil when there is a desired change in ground elevation that exceeds the angle of response of the soil
