DTE and DCE Interfaces
DTE and DCE Interfaces.pptx (Size: 126.1 KB / Downloads: 37)
Four basic functional units involved in communication of data . They are
DTE – DCE on one end.
DCE – DTE on other end.
DTE generates the data and passes them along with the necessary control characters to a DCE.
DCE Converts the signal to a format appropriate to the transmission medium and introduces it onto the network link.
DTE - Data Terminal Equipment.
DTE includes any unit that functions either as a source of or as a destination for binary digital data.
DTE can be a terminal, computer, printer , fax machine, Mobile phones or any other device that generates or consumes digital data.
DTE do not communicate directly with one another. They generate and consume information but need an intermediary to be able to communicate.
Example Function of your brain while you are talking
Brain creates the idea but cannot transmit the idea to your friend.
Brain passes that idea to your vocal chords and mouth ,converts it into sound waves that can travel thro’ the air or telephone line to your friends ear and from their to his brain.
DTE – Your brain and Your friend’s brain.
Your DCE- Your vocal chord and mouth
Friends DCE – Ear
Transmission medium – air or telephone wire.
DCE - Data Circuit Terminating Equipment.
DCE is any device that transmits or receives data in the form of an analog or digital signal through the network.
The DCE takes the data generated by a DTE, converts them to an appropriate signal and then introduces the signal onto a telecommunication link.
Example Modem – Modulator-Demodulator
In any network DTE generates the digital data and passes them to DCE.
