In initial phase of work was to prepare in-situ nanoparticles of Chitosan by complexing it with zinc and deliver it in the form of spray but the instability of these formulations as well as other concerns related to not only maintaining nano-size but also their uniform dispersion and delivery led to synthesis of Chitosanzinc complex, O, N-Carboxymethyl chitosan, a water soluble chitosan derivative and O, N-Carboxymethyl chitosan-zinc complex, a water soluble complex. After synthesis, the products were characterized by FTIR, DSC and XRD.

Comparative evaluation of antimicrobial activity of O, N-Carboxymethyl chitosan-zinc.complex and Chitosan-Zinc complex was performed against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. O, N-Carboxymethyl chitosan-zinc complex exhibited better antimicrobial activity as compared to Chitosan-Zinc complex against these pathogens.
