Abstracts: In automobile, a lot of energy generated by the engine is lost in the form of heat. Also a lot of wear and tear occurs in the engine. To avoid this lubricant oil is pumped into the system. The function of a lubricant is to reduce the wear and tear and remove the foreign particles from the engine. Viscosity of the oil plays an important role in achieving these functions. Any significant change of an oil viscosity reduction or increment may damage lubrication film stability and effectiveness. Resulting in shorter oil and component lifespan and higher oil consumption decreasing engine reliability. Viscometer is an instrument to measure the viscosity of a fluid under the flow condition. Various types of viscometers are used to measure the viscosity of the oil. All these viscometers are measuring indirect parameters like mass flow rate, vibration produced etc. The goal of this project is to develop an improved viscometer to check the viscosity of the oil used in automobile engine, by considering the factors directly affecting the viscosity of the oil. An Improved Viscometer which acts on Newton’s law of viscosity, actually calculating the Force F, the Area A, the velocity gradient du/dy and then determining the viscosity µ.
