Digital Avionics
ABSTRACT
Continued aviation growth is central to sustained U.S. and global economic growth. As air traffic continues to increase,
however, congestion, delays, and inefficiencies grow, leading to higher costs and lost productivity. Open architectures,
satellite-based systems, and system-wide information management capabilities hold the promise of relieving a near-saturated
National Airspace System (NAS). The primary goal of NASA’s Advanced Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance
(CNS) Architecture and Systems Technology Project is to initiate the transition of today’s CNS systems into a
high-performance network-centric digital infrastructure to support future development of the NAS.
