Prison programs around the country endure numerous challenges especially in rehabilitating the behavior of inmates within correctional institutions. Prison programs are used to correct, educate and rehabilitate criminal offenders so that they can become an asset to society and eliminate the inmate’s motive to re-offend. Prison programs that are widely used around the nation to reform inmates include drug programs, counseling, vocational work training, academic programs and religious programs. These rehabilitative programs are usually based on the assumption that criminal behavior in most inmates is caused by some contributing factor such as a history of violence, psychological or mental disorders. These programs will assist the inmates to transcend from the criminal lifestyle to a productive crime free lifestyle and reduce their chances of recidivism (Johnson, 2004).
