Dr. Guru Prasad Mohanta, Professor of Pharmacy at Annamalai University, is a postgraduate in pharmacy with doctoral degree and has more than 27 years of teaching and research experience. He is the inspector of Pharmacy Council of India and is one of the expert committee members of AICTE for approval of pharmacy and other technical Colleges. He is also expert member for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programme by National Board of Accreditation. He has the experience of serving WHO as National Technical Officer (Essential Drugs and Medicines) in the WHO – India Office at New Delhi. He has been bestowed with Best Researcher Award by Annamalai University during 2011-2012.
He has been trained at International Courses: Drugs and Therapeutics Committee, Rational Drugs Use in the Community, with support from WHO, SEARO. He has training on drug price survey and resource mobilization too with support from WHO and other agencies. He was the former coordinator for a peripheral center under National Pharmacovigilance Programme. He has been acknowledged in the Thirty-ninth (2005), Fortieth (2006) and Forty – First (2007) report of WHO document “Expert Committee on Specifications for Pharmaceutical Preparations”, and FIP Workforce Report 2012 for contribution.
He is well versed with Good Pharmacy Practice principle and had a unique honor to become one of the reviewers to WHO’s draft “Guide to Good Pharmaceutical Practice”. He has been acknowledged in WHO’s document “Developing Pharmacy Practice: A Focus on Patient Care: Hand Book-2006”. He is the resource person for training retail and hospital pharmacists on various aspects of drug store management and various aspects of rational drug use. He was invited to become one of the resources to provide training of medical store officers/training of trainers of Chhatisgarh, Madhya Pradesh,Delhi and Odisha on Drug Store Management (Supply Chain Management). He is the approved trainer for training HIV Care pharmacists under National AIDS Control Organization. He has been advocating the use of WHO strategy in drug selection as part of promoting RDU and improving access to medicines through media and educational programmes. He has been serving as resource for various National Level Programmes in Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice area.
He is Former Vice President of community pharmacy division of IPA and resource for training community and hospital pharmacists. He was one of the team members for development of training module in Good Pharmacy Practice and training of retail pharmacist under a WHO/Drugs Controller General (India) assisted programme. He received extensive training on Clinical Pharmacy at St. George’s Medical School Hospital, London, with support from International Pharmaceutical Federation.
He was one of the main architects for developing off campus PG Diploma programme in Promoting Rational Drug Use; and Good Pharmacy Practice and Drug Store Management, currently offered through directorate of distance education. He was one of the authors for writing texts of these programmes. He authored a Textbook on Clinical Research. He is a co-author of textbook “Pharmacy Practice and Pathophysiology”. He is the principal author of “Physical Pharmacy Practical Text”. He is one of the authors and member of editorial board for publication of a Oriya Book intended for improving use of medicines targeting Primary Level Health workers and Consumers.
He is an Associate member, of International Society of Drug Bulletins (ISDB). He has excellent communication & writing skills and has 282 articles and papers (including popular articles in Newspaper) to his credit. He was contributing a column “Know Your Medicine” in The New Indian Express’s fortnightly supplement, Health, for 4 years. He is passionate over providing community education through print and other media. He delivered talk on use of ORS and Zinc in Childhood Diarrhoea in All India Radio. He is one of the reviewers for Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Education and Research and other peer reviewed journals. He is one of the Editors of Rational Medicine Bulletin. He is member of Hospital’s Infection Control Committee and Pharmacovigilance Cell.
He is the recipient of several scholarships from various International and National bodies to attend International events. He has successfully guided six candidates for Ph. D. degree and several students for M. Pharm. He has visited countries like Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, UK, Kenya, Turkey, Brazil, UAE and Rwanda.
He is associated with various universities as examiner from degree programmes to doctoral programmes in Pharmacy. He is member of Academic Council of Annamalai University. He was also a member of Board of Studies of Pharmacy of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka and Annamalai University. He is in Academic Advisory Council of IEC College of Engineering and Technology, Noida. He is the member of advisory board of Odisha Pharmacy Intellectual Forum.
