ABSTRACT
The scientific wonder of to-day is the commonplace of to-morrow. This is certainly true of electricity's application to our modern needs.
The electric locomotive and electric motor coach may be regarded as natural developments that have followed steam traction.
HISTORY
The first experimental electric railway in the world is attributed to Thomas Davenport, a blacksmith of Vermont, U.S.A., who exhibited a small railway operated by a miniature electric motor in 1835.
TRACTION SYSTEMS
Non-Electric Traction system
Direct Steam Engine Drive
Electric traction systems
Diesel-electric Drive
Battery-electric Drive
Advantages of Electric Traction
Cleanliness
Maintenance cost
Starting Time
High Starting Torque
Braking
Saving in High Grade Coal
Overhead Equipment
The simplest type of OHE
consists of a single contact
wire of hard drawn copper
or silicon-bronze supported
either by bracket or an overhead
span. To facilitate connection
to the supports, the wire is
grooved.
