ELECTRICAL TO OPTICAL.docx (Size: 677.71 KB / Downloads: 58)
Objective:
In this lab you will explore different applications of a very basic and important block of an optical communication system, i.e. electrical to optical converter. In our lab, this block is the named as U-2980A of the ED-Laboratory equipment. The idea is to get familiarized with this basic block and also to get acquainted with its various features.
Background:
The basic block diagram of an optical communication system is given below:
We see that the electrical to optical converter is an essential part of the transmitter in an optical communication system. At transmitter, the optical source is either an LED or a laser, which differ in many aspects including sharpness of light, bandwidth availability, cost etc. The module available to us has LED as the optical source. It can be derived with both the AC and DC electrical input, with signal transmission done by the fiber optic and reception at receiver is done by optical to electrical converter, the data is finally transmitted in electrical form, the one which is the driving force at transmitter.
Observations:
You have performed 4 tasks on the E/O converter. Write your detailed observations about it including the effect of applying AC and DC source, effect of changing the LED bias current etc. This observation of yours carries individual marks.
