WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORK
A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) consists of spatially distributed autonomous sensors to monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature, sound, vibration, pressure, motion or pollutants and to cooperatively pass their data through the network to a main location.
The WSN is built of "nodes" - from a few to several hundreds or even thousands, where each node is connected to one sensors.
Sensor vs other ad hoc networks
Sensor Networks
Special communication patterns: many-to-one, one-to-many, attribute-based.
Constraints more severe than general ad hoc networks.
Distributed collaborative computing.
Mobile Ad hoc Networks
self-configuring network of mobile routers connected by wireless links.
General-purpose communication involving mobile devices
Devices are often mobile
Factors influencing sensor network design
Fault tolerance
Fault tolerance is the ability to sustain sensor network functionalities without any interruption due to sensor node failures.
The fault tolerance level depends on the application of the sensor networks.
Production costs
The cost of a single node is very important to justify the overall cost of the networks.
The cost of a sensor node is a very challenging issue given the amount of functionalities with a price of much less than a dollar.
ENERGY-AWARE WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS
Most important consideration for a wireless sensor network is power consumption.
Energy is provided to the node from an
energy source ,such as solar, vibration or wind, & replacement of primary batteries.
Energy obtained from the energy source is buffered in an energy store called super capacitor.
Main task is to forward the sensing data gathered by sensor nodes to the base station
Requirement of clustering algorithm
A clustering algorithm should be completely distributed because a centralized control manner is not practical in a large-scale sensor network.
The cluster heads should be well distributed throughout the monitoring area to make energy consumption be well-balanced among all sensor nodes.
The clustering algorithm itself should be energy efficient.
A clustering algorithm needs to handle the heterogeneous energy circumstance.
