Final respiratory system.ppt (Size: 1.51 MB / Downloads: 60)
Purpose of the respiratory system
To provide a constant supply of oxygen to keep your body cells functioning
To remove carbon dioxide from the body cells
Enable for speech production
Respiration Process
Breathing (ventilation): air in to and out of lungs
External respiration: gas exchange between air and blood
Internal respiration: gas exchange between blood and tissues
Cellular respiration: oxygen use to produce ATP, carbon dioxide as waste
Upper Respiratory Tract Functions
Passageway for respiration
Receptors for smell
Filters incoming air to filter larger foreign material
Moistens and warms incoming air
Resonating chambers for voice
Trachea :
Air-conducting tube
Connects the larynx with the bronchi
Lined with mucous membranes and cilia
Contains strong cartilage rings
Bronchi :
Two short tubes that branch off the lower end of the trachea
Carry air into the lungs.
Singular - bronchus
Bronchioles :
Tiny branches of air tubes in the lungs
Disorders of Respiratory System
Reduced air flow: Asthma, Emphysema, bronchitis
Infections: Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, Botulism
Lung cancer
Cystic fibrosis
Viscous mucus blocks bronchioles
Gas exchange impaired
Connect bronchi to alveoli
