INTRODUCTION:
ORIGIN: Came into being during primitive times.
DEFINITION:
Study of botany of primitive human race.
It also means study of plants used by primitive and aboriginal people.

TODAYS SCENARIO: Traditional medicine incorporates several well organsied and distinct systems of diagnosis and cure.
Traditional systems like Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Chinese, Tibetan still widely used.
The aims to study Ethnobotany are-
To document facts about plant use and plant management.
To elucidate the ethnobotanical text by defining, describing and investigation ethnobotanical roles and processes.
Other reasons for doing Ethnobotanical research-
To rescue knowledge in imminent danger of being lost.
The utility of plants in current therapy.
To find new molecular models in plants.
To obtain intermediate chemicals
Wide use of plants a medicines.
Impact of Ethnobotany in Traditional Medicine
80% of world’s population relies on traditional medicine to maintain its health.
To overcome the political, economic and social barrier which slows down the delivery of biomedical healthcare, Ethnobotany can contribute in two ways-
Ethnoecological studies provide models for profitable and environmentally sound, use land management program.
It invokes economic potential of undiscovered natural products.
ECONOMIC VALUE OF ETHNOBOTANICAL CONTRIBUTION-
Provide ‘miracle plants’ of immense food and medicinal values.
Ethnic people holds genetic key of valuable ‘miracle crops’ for future.
Chemical investigation of 300 indigenous medicinal plants shows unknown compounds with promising biological activities.
Succession of so called “Wonder Drugs” (Reserpine, Quinine, Emetin, Khellin, Guggulipid) discovered from plants with rich ethnobotanical role in tribal societies.
Nutritional evaluation of about 200 wild edible plants have been carried out.
Biotech using ethnic knowledge with modern tools of genetic engineering to get desired results.
