The structural and functional unit of ecology is known as the ecosystem.
e.g. Tree
Abiotic
Non-living components like light, temperature, etc.
Inorganic and organic compounds
Quantity of abiotic materials present in an ecosystem is called the “standing stage”.
Types of Ecosystem
Marine ecosystem: e.g. sea, ocean
Freshwater ecosystem: e.g. ponds, streams, rivers and lakes
Terrestrial ecosystem : e.g. desert, grassland, tree, crop
fields, forest, etc.
4) Man-engineered ecosystem : e.g. Agriculture and
aquaculture
Functional Components of an Ecosystem
Biodiversity
Productivity (primary and secondary)
Food chains and food webs
Material cycling and energy flow
Balance of nature
Succession and evolution of ecosystems
