Abstract
I f the accuracy of the work done by any gadget is precision, and then the cost of manufacturing the gadget becomes directly proportional to it. This in turn decreases the end users affordability or adoptability to i t. In the coming decades, the quality of work will play the role in all the fields. Too considering the Medical field, the accuracy, time, precision, adoptability, user -friendly are al l to be considered. This parameters plays the most important to develop a gadget in Medical field. So these parameters measure the cost of the gadget developed. This direct increases the cost of usage to the end user. As far as the embedded is in action, al l the above noted parameters are brought into a single chip, too a tiny gadget which reduces the cost of manufacture, user friendly, adoptability , precision etc. As the gadget is reduced in its size but maintaining the end result with most advantages then a machine, i t makes the end users to use them at cheaper costs.

EDGE_28_01_03.ppt (Size: 865.5 KB / Downloads: 97) EDGE EDGE is an extension of GPRS. The 4 GPRS Coding Schemes are extended with 9 new EDGE Modulation and Coding Schemes What is EDGE for ? Improves spectral efficiency New EDGE Modulation & Coding Schemes • GSM/GPRS uses GMSK modulation (Gaussian Modulated Shift Keying) and 4 Coding Schemes are defined in GPRS : CS1 to CS4. • EDGE introduces a new modulation : 8PSK (8 Phase Shift Keying). – 8PSK defines 8 states of the radio signal instead of 2 for GMSK. – 3 bits can be coded with 8PSK instead of 1 for GMSK. Backhaul Update for EDGE Throughput • Higher coding schemes for increased user data throughput drives higher backhaul requirements. • Backhaul increased in 64kbps (DS0) increments for Abis. • Backhaul increased in 16kbps (¼ DS0) increments for Agprs. Dynamic Abis • Main TS : 16k TS used for voice, data circuit and GPRS dedicated to one radio TS, • Joker TS : each TDMA is associated to a set of 64K TS – each 64k TS is divided in 16 k TS – these 16k TS used only for EDGE, – dynamically shared between all radio TS of the TDMA. • Each radio frame is managed by : – the main TS, – n joker TS, according to the PDU size. – each joker frame indicates the associated main TS at each ccurrence Cell throughput distribution • Throughput highly depends on radio quality (distance from cell center and interferences). Link Adaptation adapts the MCS based on those variable radio conditions

Edge technology
Edge technology.ppt.pptx (Size: 297.64 KB / Downloads: 48) Mobile Evolution Till now there are mainly 4 generations observed in mobile technology. These are 1G, 2G, 2.5G and 3G. 1G came as Advanced mobile system in 1983. 2G was introduced in 1998 in U.S.A. 3G was introduced in late 2008. 4G is still in development stage. Edge technology EDGE is a high speed mobile data standard. Uses TDMA and follows GSM. Transmits data at up to 384 kbits per second. Builds on General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) air interface and networks Channel coding Uses Gaussian minimum-shift keying (GMSK). Also uses higher-order phase shift keying (8PSK) for the upper five of its nine modulation and coding schemes. EDGE produces a 3-bit word for every change in carrier phase. Major Applications EDGE enables operators to introduce 3G data applications into existing GSM networks. It enables:- Mobile Internet access Mobile Office Electronic banking Electronic cash Electronic payment

EDGE
EDGE.docx (Size: 43.17 KB / Downloads: 64) Abstract Enhanced Global Packet Radio Service (EGPRS) offers a substantial improvement in performance and capacity over existing GPRS services, in return for a relatively minimal additional investment. EGPRS, commonly called EDGE, achieves these enhancements to the GPRS system primarily by implementing changes to the Physical layer and to the Medium Access Control/Radio Link Control (MAC/RLC) layer. The significant improvements are a new modulation technique, additional modulation coding schemes, a combined Link Adaptation and Incremental Redundancy technique, re-segmentation of erroneously received packets, and a larger transmission window size. Introduction EDGE is the next step in the evolution of GSM and IS- 136. The objective of the new technology is to increase data transmission rates and spectrum efficiency and to facilitate new applications and increased capacity for mobile use. With the introduction of EDGE in GSM phase 2+, existing services such as GPRS and high-speed circuit switched data (HSCSD) are enhanced by offering a new physical layer. EDGE is introduced within existing specifications and description rather than by creating new ones. This paper focuses on the packet-switched enhancement for GPRS, called EGPRS. GPRS allows data rates of 115 kbps and, theoretically, of up to 160 kbps on the physical layer. EGPRS is capable of offering data rates of 384 kbps and, theoretically, of up to 473.6 kbps. A new modulation technique and error-tolerant transmission methods, combined with improved link adaptation mechanisms, make these EGPRS rates possible. This is the key to increased spectrum efficiency and enhanced applications, such as wireless Internet access, e-mail and file transfers , GPRS/EGPRS will be one of the pacesetters in the overall wireless technology evolution in conjunction with WCDMA. Higher transmission rates for specific radio resources enhance capacity by enabling more traffic for both circuit- and packet-switched services. EDGE technology A.Technical differences between GPRS and EGPRS Regarded as a subsystem within the GSM standard, GPRS has introduced packet-switched data into GSM networks. Many new protocols and new nodes have been introduced to make this possible.EDGE is a method to increase the data rates on the radio link for GSM. Basically, EDGE only introduces a new modulation technique and new channel coding that can be used to transmit both packet-switched and circuit-switched voice and data services. EDGE is therefore an add-on to GPRS and cannot work alone. GPRS has a greater impact on the GSM system than EDGE has. By adding the new modulation and coding to GPRS and by making adjustments to the radio link protocols, EGPRS offers significantly higher throughput and capacity. GPRS and EGPRS have different protocols and different behavior on the base station system side. However, on the core network side, GPRS and EGPRS share the same packet-handling protocols and, therefore, behave in the same way. Reuse of the existing GPRS core infrastructure (serving GRPS support node/gateway GPRS support node) emphasizes the fact that EGPRS is only an “add-on” to the base station system and is therefore much easier to introduce than GPRS. In addition to enhancing the throughput for each data user, EDGE also increases capacity. With EDGE, the same time slot can support more users. EGPRS benefits: Capacity and performance: EGPRS introduces a new modulation technique, along with improvements to the radio protocol, that allows operators to use existing frequency spectrums (800, 900, 1800 and 1900MHz) more effectively. The simple improvements of the existing GSM/GPRS protocols make EDGE a cost-effective, easy-toimplement add-on. Software upgrades in the base station system enable use of the new protocol; new transceiver units in the base station enable use of the new modulation technique. EDGE triples the capacity of GPRS. This capacity boost improves the performance of existing applications and enables new services such as multimedia services. It also enables each transceiver to carry more voice and/or data traffic. EDGE enables new applications at higher data rates. This will attract new subscribers and increase an operator’s customer base. Providing the best and most attractive services will also increase customer loyalty Conclusion: This paper has presented an overview of EDGE with particular focus on the physical layer and the data link layer. The goal of EDGE is to provide a packet data network that provides operating rates that are of adequate speed for most applications. EDGE achieves this increase in throughput rate mainly through enhancements to the physical layer and the RLC/MAC layer of the GPRS system.
