Abstracts: ABSTRACT Indian Railways has 31846 level crossings out of which 18316 are manned and 13530 are unmanned level crossings. These level crossings are not only the bottlenecks in Train Operation, but also a major contributor to the accidents and fatalities. On Indian Railway, level crossings contribute approximately 40% of consequential train accidents. In terms of casualties, they contribute more than 70%. Most of the accidents take place on unmanned level crossings. Unmanned level crossings are potential safety hazard where the accidents occur primarily due to inadequate precautions by the road users failing to observe mandatory sign boards, signals and basic traffic safety rules. Manned level crossings are hindrance to smooth flow of Road/rail traffic. Accidents do occur on these manned level crossings on various accounts. In VISION 2020 it is envisaged to eliminate all unmanned LCs in a time frame of five years (2010-11 to 2014-15). Accordingly the planning has been made by Indian railways to eliminate 10536 level crossings out of which 1234 has been eliminated in 2010-11. Elimination of LCs is also necessary as these affects the punctuality of trains and causes stoppage of road vehicles. Elimination of unmanned level crossings is done by construction of Road Over Bridge (ROB), Road Under Bridge (RUB), manning of LC or by permanent closure of low TVU unmanned LCs. This project work includes study on the procedures of LC Elimination applied in Vadodara division of Western Railways, which includes the construction of both Road Over Bridges and Road Under Bridges on several broad gauge main lines along with the necessary census (vehicle) data including both trains and road vehicles across selected LCs and brief design of the structures that had to be build across these LCs.
