ABSTRACT:
This paper is an attempt to study and understand one of the emerging technology of today’s computer world i.e. Windows 8. Windows 8 is the version of the “Microsoft Windows computer operating systems” following Windows 7. It has many changes from the previous versions. In particular it adds support for ARM microprocessors in addition to the x86 microprocessors from INTEL and AMD supported previously. There are many changes in Windows 8 as compared to Microsoft’s previous Windows. Windows 8 contain a new user interface based on Microsoft’s design language named Metro. It is very surprising to note that this windows runs at 128-bit which is a dramatic change for the processor manufacturing companies like INTEL, Apple Inc. etc. Many changes in hardware and software are taking place for its success. This introduction brings dramatic changes in the world of computer.
Introduction
An operating system is a set of programs that manage computer hardware resources and provide common services for application software. In 1940’s, the earliest electronic digital systems had no operating systems. Glide OS 4.0 was the first complete online operating system.
These days there are many operating systems present in the market like Windows, DOS, LINUX and lots more. Windows is the widely used operating system because of its speed and
quality. Its interface is user friendly. The latest version of windows is Windows 8.
About Microsoft Corporation:
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT and NYSE: MSFT) is an American public multinational corporation. It develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports a wide range of products and services predominantly related to computing through its various product divisions.
Microsoft entered into the OS business in 1980 with its own UNIX, called XENIX. However, it was DOS (Disk Operating System) that solidified the company’s dominance. Microsoft manufactured many operating systems over the years. One of its popular OS is Windows. Microsoft has many OS under this name such as Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 and now they are planning to launch Windows 8 in 2012.
Microsoft is also expected to release the first Windows 8 beta at the Anaheim, Califonia conference.
Windows 8
Microsoft Corporations’ latest OS is Windows 8. It will contain a new user interface based on Microsoft’s design language Metro. With the new change, the Start Menu was replaced in favor for the new Start Screen, where there are tiles that contain shortcuts to applications, Metro style applications, and updating tiles, similar to Windows phone.
Mandatory Restarts:
In previous Windows, every time new system software installed, we need to restart our operating system to run the software in an effective manner. Windows 8 will arrive with a promise to minimize the amount of mandatory restarts needed after the installation of monthly and out-of-band Windows updates.
Easy to access:
Windows 8 will also eliminate popup windows and dialog boxes concerning pending restarts and instead display the notifications in the login screen. The notifications will give users three days to reboot the machine after installing and update. If the machine hasn't been shutdown or restarted by then and Windows Update doesn't detect any critical applications are running, it will automatically restart the machine. Also in the event applications are running in the background or there are potentially unsaved work, users will see a message at login asking them to save their work, along with a warning that the machine will be restarted within 15 minutes.
Delaying Update:
Microsoft has stolen an idea from the antivirus industry and decided to delay updates if we are performing certain tasks on our machine. So if we are doing something that shouldn’t be interrupted, like playing game or watching a movie full screen, the update is delayed.
If we don’t turn on automatic update, then the control is still in our hands of when exactly to install these updates. But at least now if we do decide to go automatic, the updates are applied in a more intelligent manner, restarts only happen once a month and we get plenty of warnings before they occur.
CONCLUSION:
Finally, we can sum up our study or discussion by saying that this technology boom will help the computer world a lot and prove very fruitful. This change will definitely bring a revolution in the world of technology.
