Introduction to forging “Forgi?g is the pro?ess ?y ?hi?h ?etal is heated and is shaped by plastic deformation by suitably applyi?g ?o?pressi?e for?e’’ Equipment Drop hammer The most common type of forging equipment is the hammer and anvil. The hammer and anvil are still used today in drop-hammer equipment. The machine is very simple--raise the hammer and then drop it into the work piece, which rests on the anvil.
Types of forging 1.Hammer Forging 2.Press Forging 3.Die Forging: i. OPEN DIE FORGING ii. CLOSED DIE FORGING HAMMER FORGING:A hammer or ram, delivering intermittent blows to the section to be forged, applies this pressure. The hammer is dropped from its maximum height, usually raised by steam or air pressure. Hammer forging can produce a wide variety of shapes and sizes The disadvantage to this process is that finish machining is often required, as close dimensional tolerances cannot be obtained. In modern times, industrial forging is done either with presses or with hammers powered by compressed air, electricity, hydraulics or steam. These hammers are large, having reciprocating weights in the thousands of pounds.
