INTRODUCTION
An Air Compressor is a device that converts power (usually from an electric motor, a diesel engine or a gasoline engine) into kinetic energy by compressing and pressurizing air, which, on command, can be released in quick bursts.
The energy can be used for a variety of applications, usually by utilizing the kinetic energy of the air as it is depressurized.
Compressor is mostly used to power tools, for filling tires etc. But pedals can also power small stationary machines.
A pedal powered air compressor does exactly the same as a regular compressor, but it's powered by human.
The pedal powered air compressor set up, has a simple mechanism operated with the chain and sprocket arrangement. The chain is placed on the teeth of the wheel and pinion.
LITERATURE SURVEY
1. P. S. Borkar et al [2] this paper describes pneumatics jacks can act in the place of hydraulic jacks efficiently. Hence pneumatic equipment is easier to set-up then hydraulics. The working fluid of the pneumatic system absorbs excessive force, leading to less frequent damage to equipment. As our jack is inbuilt the fatigue is less. It serves better than hydraulic jacks which is used for lifting up.
2. P.Balashanmugam et al [3] this paper describes high speed indication is given and automatic braking is applied by cutting off the fuel supply to the engine when the setup speed is exceeded. In our project, we have used solenoid valve and an operational amplifier circuit using LM324IC. The alternations to be made to implement this project in the vehicles are also discussed.
3. G.Balasubramanian et al [4] this paper describes the design and fabrication of Multi engine air compressor in the common compression chamber have been successfully completed. The performance of the compressor was found to be satisfactory and the output of the compressor is Continuous it is up to the level expected.
OBJECTIVES
To design and fabricate pedal operated air compressor.
To build working prototype without using any prime movers like electric motors or related to it.
To achieve a supply pressure up to 20-25 psi by human power.
METHODOLOGY
Initially starting with cycle pedaling operation is manually. The sprocket is coupled to another sprocket with the help of chain drive. The second sprocket shaft is coupled to the Cam plate with the help of End bearings. The Cam plate is coupled to the pneumatic cylinder with the help of Cam shaft.
The 2 outlet ports are connected to an actuator (Cylinder). The pneumatic activates is a double acting, single rod cylinder. The cylinder output is coupled to further purpose. The piston end has an air horning effect to prevent sudden thrust at extreme ends. The end of the cylinder two Non return valve is connected for both of the side. One non return valve for suction side and another one non return valve are for delivery side.
The pedaling operation done by manually with the help of man and this power is transferred to the Cam mechanism. This Cam and cam shaft is used to activate the pneumatic cylinder. The pneumatic cylinder forward stroke is suction of the air and return stroke will deliver the air. Hence, that the delivered air is compressed in the storage tank.
ADVANTAGES
This is of compact in size.
Less Maintenance is enough.
Quite running and smooth operation is achieved.
Higher efficiency.
Effective working principle.
It does not have any Prime mover, like electric motor related to the unit.
It is economical.
LIMITATIONS
It is costlier than the other types of pump because of compressor unit.
Less efficiency when compared to other device.
Leakage of air affects the working of the unit.
APPLICATIONS
Used for light duty spray painting
Domestic Applications Industrial Applications
Used in laboratories and pharmaceuticals
Used for cooling electronic circuits.
POSSIBLE OUTCOME
To achieve a supply pressure up to 20-25 psi under the normal conditions.
it is an very safe, eco-friendly, pollution free, very economical.
This system is easy to operate and can be made at a very less expense.
This is of compact in size, hence pneumatic equipment is easier to set-up than hydraulics.
