Introduction:
The apparatus consist of a wall mounted fixed pulley with a loaded belt. Two different pulleys are available. One is for flat belt and other is for v belt with 45 degrees grooves.
Objectives:
The purpose of the experiment is to study the tension in the tight and slack side. Of flat and V belts. Wrap around a pulley. And to determine the coefficient of friction.
Apparatus:
Belt, Pulley, Load Hanger, Load. String, Pen and pencil.
Observation and Calculation:
Let T¬1 = tension in tight side of belt and T2 be the tension in slack side of belt.
μ = Coefficient of Friction
θ= Angle of Friction
β= Angle of V Belt
T1 / T2 = eμθcosecβ
In (T1 / T2) = μθcosecβ
μ = In (T1 / T2) / θcosecβ
Precaution:
1. Add weight slowly without jerks
2. Weight should be increased in small steps
3. Taping of pulley should be done after increasing the weights.
Conclusion:
1. Study the tension in the slack and tight side of the V belt wrapped around the pulley and also determined the coefficient of friction.
2. Observe the tension in the belt of each side of contact arc and from this deduce the coefficient of friction.
3. Value of ln(T1 / T2) increases with the increase in value of θ.
