INTRODUCTION
In automobile industries hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical system plays a major role in tightening and removing the bolts of the wheel. But in our day to day life it is not easy to use those systems domestically. Because of its high cost and size. Average class people find it difficult to use in their households. In order to overcome this “GEARED WHEEL WRENCH” is designed. It is a portable device and can be easily operated. The operation and mechanism for this equipment is simple and can be easily understood.
SPUR GEAR
A gear or more correctly a “gear wheel” is a rotating machine part having cut teeth, or cogs, which mesh with another toothed part in order to transmit torque. Two or more gears working in tandem are called transmission and can produce a mechanical advantage through a gear ratio and thus may be considered a simple machine. Geared devices can change speed, magnitude, and direction of power source. The most common situation for a gear is to mesh with another gear. However a gear can also mesh with a non-rotating toothed part, called a rack, thereby producing translation instead of rotation.
Spur gears or straight cut gears are the simplest type of gear. They consist of a cylinder or disk with the teeth projecting radially, and they are not straight-sided in form. The edge of each tooth is straight and aligned parallel to the axis of rotation. These gears can be meshed together correctly only if they are fitted to parallel shafts.
DRIVER GEAR
The driver gear used is a spur gear. Spur gears are used because they have straight gears and are aligned parallel to the axis of rotation. When the hand lever is rotated the driver gear gets rotated through the connecting shaft.
External type of spur gear is used. So when the driver gear rotates in clockwise direction, the driven gear rotates in the anticlockwise direction. Similarly when the driver gear rotates in the anticlockwise direction, the pinion gear rotates in the clockwise direction. There are four pinion gears attached to the driver gear.
SOCKET SET
A socket is typically a cylinder which has a female six- or twelve-point recessed opening sized to fit over the common male hexagonal head of a fastener and a standardized square recess on the other end called the drive, to accept the ratchet handle's standardized drive size. Sockets are made to be interchangeable for a given socket wrench size and a wide range of fastener sizes. Because of their versatility nearly all screw and bolt types now have sockets of different types made to fit their bolts or nuts.
HAND LEVER
Hand lever is the major component for transmitting power to the gears. Hand lever is connected to the center of the driver gear through the shaft so that it can be rotated. The human effort is applied to the hand lever. The hand lever is designed with the desired length in order to multiply the human effort applied into the suitable torque required. The hand lever is also provided with a rubber bush at the end in order to give a cushioning effect for the user.
COVER PLATES
Cover plates are made up of mild steel sheets of 5 mm thickness. The cover plates forms a box, which covers all the gears that are meshed together. They are provided mainly for the safety measures so that the gears do not injure the user by any means. It also provides a enclosure so that the gear oil can be filled such that the friction between the gears is greatly reduced and longest life of the gear is ensured. The cover plate also improves the aesthetics of the equipment.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
The basic working principle of this geared wheel wrench is that the single force applied at one end is converted into four equal forces at the other end. This wrench has a driver gear attached at the centre and four driven gears meshed around it. The driven gears are fixed with socket holder such that when the gear rotates, the socket holders also rotate along with them. Since they are external spur gears, driver gear and the driven gears rotate in the opposite direction.
When the hand lever is rotated in the clockwise direction, the driver gear rotates in the same direction of the hand lever and the pinion gear rotates in the anticlockwise direction. Due to this the bolts in the wheel can be removed. Similarly when the lever is rotated in the anticlockwise direction, the driver gear also rotates in anticlockwise direction and the pinion gear rotates in clockwise direction. Due to this movement the bolts can be tighten to the wheels with the required torque.
CONCLUSION
This innovation will make the most desirable, economical. This project “GEARED WHEEL WRENCH” is designed with the hope that it is very much economically helpful to small scale automobile industries and as household.
This method can be further improved by using motors. This is a cost effective access solution. It’s simple and elegant design makes it the most rugged and reliable. Thus the project work has been done successfully.
