Introduction
Kothagudem (AP) area is known to be a geological
museum in southern Peninsula and is a tri-junction
of three major tectonic domains, viz; Eastern
Dharwar Craton, Bastar Craton and Eastern ghat
mobile belt with the cover of Proterozoic Pakhal and
Phanerozoic Gondwana sediments of the Pranhita-
Godavari basin.
The Pranhita-Godavari basin extends for over
400km in NW-SE direction from Boregaon in
Maharashtra to Eluru in Andhra Pradesh. It
comprises an axial zone of Gondwana and flanked
on either side by Proterozoic sediments. In
Kothagudem-Paloncha area, the Pakhal basin
abruptly ends against the basement gneiss with a
major NE-SW trending tectonic contact and is
marked by a wide zone of ductile shear and thus the
southeastern part of Pakhal basin is highly
deformed.
The terrestrial Gondwana sequence, ranging from
Permo-Carboniferous to early Cretaceous is
completely preserved in this unique segment. The
parallic sediments of Upper Gondwana are closely
associated with this sequence which are parallel to
the east coast. The varying thickness of Gondwana
sediments in the individual sectors is due to the post
depositional disturbances, which caused in the
formation of different structural sub-basins. In
Kothagudem – Paloncha area, there is a narrow
constriction in the width of Gondwana basin, which
is popularly known as ‘Paloncha Neck’. The eastern
margin of Paloncha neck swerves in an arcuate
pattern around the basement rocks which is
regarded as ‘Mailaram metamorphic high’.
About the Workshop
The data generated on various aspects of the
Godavari basin was presented periodically in various
scientific forums like International Gondwana
Symposiums, Workshops on Purana basin, scientific
journals, etc. Recently, the GSI Training Institute has
started a Field Training Centre at Kothagudem to
impart basic and advanced training courses on the
sedimentary geology and coal exploration. During the
training programmes, additional data on the
deformation of Pakhal sediments, structural and
sedimentological aspects of Gondwana sequence
have been generated. Through uninterrupted
exploration activity, the SCCL is not only generating
valuable information on the coal resources but also
using the most modern methods for coal exploration &
exploitation.
About Kothagduem
Kothagudem is a major coal mining centre in
Southern India and is situated close to the famous
pilgrimage town, Bhadrachalam (AP) along the bank
of Godavari River. Kothagudem (Bhadrachalam
Road Railway Station) is connected by both road and
rail from Hyderabad (280 km) and Vijayawada (140
km).
