INTRODUCTION
Biofuel is any gas , solid or liquid derived from organic matter and animal fats intended to be burned as an alternative to fossil fuels.
We are familiar with biofuels like biodiesel,
bioethanol etc.Recently though, Green
Diesel has been gaining importance.
GREEN DIESEL
Also known as Renewable diesel.
Second generation biofuel.
They are chemically same as petro-diesel, but made from biomass.
It can be mixed with petro-diesel in any proportion.
Renewable diesel in its pure form is designated R100,while a blend comprised of 20% renewable diesel and 80% petro diesel is called R20.
HYDROTREATING
In this process , feedstock is treated with hydrogen under elevated temp. and pressure.
Hydrogen ,in presence of catalyst converts the triglyceride molecules into paraffinic hydro-carbons.
Operating temp. is around 300-3800C,while the pressure is around 10-20 bar .
THERMAL CONVERSION
Also known as thermal depolymerisation, hydro-thermal processing etc.
Involves the breakdown of complex organic materials(biomass etc.) into light crude oil.
Conversion temperatures are around 570-6600F,while the pressure is around 100-170 atms.
Oil produced varies in oxygen content depending on the type of feedstock.
BIOMASS TO LIQUID CONVERSION
In this method biomass is converted into syn-gas by high temperature gasification.
The gasification process is achieved by means of air, oxygen or steam to produce raw syn-gas.
The bio-syngas is then cleaned to remove contaminants like small char particles, ash and tar.
CONCLUSION
The green diesel process presents itself as a new and sustainable route in the production of premium quality diesel fuel.
It is superior to biodiesel in terms of stability, cold flow properties etc.
The green diesel process can thus play a huge role in the area of renewable fuel sources.
