Formation of large amounts of a target or product protein is always detrimental to the cells.
Cells that lose the ability to make a target protein often grow much more quickly than the productive strain and can displace the productive strain in a continuous reactor
Larger problem in industry when have 10,000 liter fermentor with many generations than a 50 ml shake flask.
