Abstract:
Geosynthesis, newly emerging field in the civil engineering and other fields. Geosynthesis play a significant part in modern pavement design and maintenance work. The growth in their use worldwide for transportation applications in particular, has been nothing short of phenomenal. Geosynthetics are ideal materials for infrastructural works such as roads, harbors and many others. Application areas of geosynthetics ranges from ocean bed to roadbed, from foundations on soft soils to landslide control and from waste disposal sites to water reservoir, these have become an integral part of many civil engineering problems. They have a bright future, thanks to their multifunctional characteristics.
Geosynthetics utilize a high strength synthetic fabric as a form for casting large units by filling them with air, water, sand or mortar, as a screen for guiding flow or a curtain for collecting sand, etc. Structures made of flexible, high-tensile strength geosynthetics have the advantage of simple manufacturing, lightweight transportation and usually an easy construction process; strength and durability can be chosen according to the purpose.
In this paper, the overview of the general idea about geosynthesis, properties of geosynthetics, uses of geosynthetics and some recommendations for future use and/or improvements are discussed.
